Our Story

ratskeller history skyway

The Ratskeller is a nostalgic bar and restaurant in the sleepy town of Government Camp, Oregon. Many locals and visitors alike have made memories and created traditions here over the years, join us today and make yourself at home.

Ole Langerud built the original Ratskeller building in 1938 by himself with no lifts or cranes! The first floor where the bar and kitchen is now was firewood storage and a garage. On the second floor Hjalmer Hvam had a ski shop in partnership with Langerud. Hjalmer Hvam was a champion ski jumper and racer, in addition to inventing the worlds first safety binding. The third floor was living quarters for Langerud and guests that he guided on ski outings.

It wasn’t until 1963 that the former firewood storage space and garage were converted into a pizza and beer business. Then, once the east addition was added to make room for a dance floor in the tavern, The Ratskeller was born.
